—since 2015 where she functions as movement coach and process facilitator

Urban Bush Women’s 2022 Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) in New York City is an intensive 10-day convening where we will learn effective ways to deepen or begin our work as artists who want to connect our art to community organizing and progressive social change strategies.

The SLI is UBW’s annual 10-day intensive that serves as the foundation for all of UBW’s community engagement activities. SLI builds the global network of community arts practitioners, and what UBW Founder Jawole Zollar calls “front line social justice workers,” by connecting dance professionals and community-based artists in a learning experience that leverages the arts as a vehicle for social activism and civic engagement. SLI began in 1997 and formalized as an annual UBW program in 2004.

SOMATIC MOVEMENT IS...

Somatic Movement enhances human function and body-mind integration through mindful and restorative movement. Our profession encompasses distinct disciplines each with their own educational or therapeutic emphasis, principles, methods and techniques.

Our practices incorporate: postural and movement evaluation; experiential anatomy; guided movement patterning to increase efficiency; all while developing perceptual, kinesthetic and proprioceptive sensitivity. Somatic Movement Education and Therapy supports homeostasis, co-regulation and neuro-plasticity in our students and clients.

We ensure that training programs uphold high standards of education and practice, and maintain a professional registry of qualified practitioners. We are committed to building the professional community of Somatic Movement Educators and Therapists worldwide and advocating for the profession in legal and governmental arenas.
